Well this is fun.

It seems I’m going to be back on the hunt, but this time I have Program Manager experience to boost my Tech Docs/Business Analyst knowledge. I feel optimistic this early on, even though I’m sure it will be difficult to find somewhere new that I enjoyed working at quite as much as Whirlwind. What makes a great company is truly its people and its mission; if the mission is well stated, the people can get behind it. Talented people will work together to do anything you need them to, so long as the mission is clear.

When I was a child, my mom took me to a child psychologist to see why I was acting strangely when I came home from my father’s house during the summers. The thing I remember most clearly about that interaction is that he was wearing argyle socks, and that’s the day I learned what argyle was, and the word of it. After our session, he told my mother that I “sparkled like a diamond.” She repeated that story to me many times over the years before she passed in July of 2022, and it was a common theme in gifts she would give for Christmas and birthdays. But I’ve always been obsessed with all things glittery and sparkly, so when I discovered Cristine on Simply Nailogical and her gorgeous Holo Taco nail polish sets, I was immediately addicted. About once a month, I completely reset my nails with a different style, and it’s something my husband tolerates because it makes me happy. I love him extra for allowing me to have this habit, and while it’s a bit expensive, for me it’s completely worth it.

Christmas gumdrops 2021. Sometimes I paint my cuticles, too, but it wears off and looks better the next day.

Random Thoughts

Since I was laid off from Identity Automation in August of 2022 after 3 1/2 years of successfully running their documentation (much of which I did alone), I have had some difficulty finding a perfect fit in the workforce once again. My earnest hope is that a small start-up with no tech writer will find me because they need someone to set up their documentation department and actually develop a user manual as well as an internal documentation protocol. I do what I do because I love it and it’s interesting to me, and because nobody else ever wants to deal with the tedium and organized chaos that is documentation in an engineering environment. But I like it and have built a career on that.

However, I’ve begun to start asking myself: If I’m not a documentation professional, what can I do? What jobs can I apply for that will utilize my existing skill set to the fullest while still providing an interesting work environment/decent paycheck? (i.e., I don’t want to go back to secretarial/assistant work if I can help it.) So this is my identity crisis at 42 years of age.
